Reverend Margaret Clyde

Reverend Margaret is a senior monk of the Order of Buddhist Contemplatives who has been training at the priory since re-entered the monastic life in May, 2009. She was ordained by Reverend Master Jiyu-Kennett in 1981 and received Dharma Transmission from her in March, 1985. After training for ten years at Shasta Abbey, she returned to lay life for many years, teaching in Adult Education and working at a shelter/clinic for cats. She re-robed at the Portland Buddhist Priory under the direction of Rev. Master Meiko Jones. Reverend Margaret grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area and received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of California, Berkeley.

Mr. Beauregard

Beauregard's name can be translated from the French as "Right View." He is the senior four-legged resident of the priory, having arrived during the summer of 2002 at the age of five. Before becoming a temple cat, Mr. B enjoyed a princely existence. Here at the priory he has been training to temper his greed and predatory instincts. Although not inclined towards formal religious activities, he is a friendly cat who loves interacting with humans and is often present at the front door to greet visitors, and at Dharma talks and teas.

Mr. Doshin

Doshin was born in the year 2000. He is a purebred German shepherd dog who was born and raised for show and breeding. Before he came to the priory in 2008, he competed in dog shows and sired at least one litter. Upon entering the priory, he was given the name Doshin which means, "He whose heart trusts in the Way." We believe that he spent much of his life in a kennel with limited human contact. Since coming to the priory he has been training himself to live in community with the other priory residents. He is also training with physical illnesses including spinal arthritis, learning to be patient and accepting of his aging body. Being docile and quiet, he has had to learn to interact with visitors and slowly has become quite fond of treats and affection.
