Overview: History & Background of Portland Buddhist Priory

The Portland Buddhist Priory, a temple established in 1975, is a branch of the Order of Buddhist Contemplatives (OBC)

This international Buddhist Order has its headquarters at Shasta Abbey, a Buddhist seminary and training monastery.

In accord with the Serene Reflection Meditation (Soto Zen)Tradition, the practice of the Order emphasizes meditation, mindfulness in daily life, compassion and adherence to the Buddhist Precepts.

The Order provides opportunities for Buddhist practice at introductory and advanced levels to lay people, and offers training programs for women and men in both the lay ministry and the priesthood.

The Order and the Priory were both founded by the late Reverend Master Jiyu-Kennett.
